Are Cries of "Puto" Anti Gay Harassment at CMUDE 2014?

Image
We will be posting a response from tournament organizers as well. From our correspondent in Mexico at CMUDE 2014: Since at least 10 years ago, (or something close to that) Mexican soccer fans have been making an infamous "eeeeeh puto!" chant at soccer stadiums. As the opposing goalie is lining up to take an offside kick, the crowd starts amping up with "eeeeeeeeeh" and then as the goalie kicks the ball they shout "puto" in unison. At the beginning of CMUDE, the very first motion was something along the lines of "THBT people have a moral duty to not shout "puto" in sporting event stadiums" During the tournament, that chant has happened multiple times in multiple occasions: At the Night of Nations, where different countries had different stands of food and drink, at the Welcoming night party on the dancefloor several times, when we were lining up as countries before the Opening Ceremony it happened again, and most prominently, it happened...

CMUDE Organizers Respond About Anti-Gay Speech Charges

Image
David Alatorre Lopez, CMUDE Organizer: About what you have heard regarding homophobic speech it is very complex to explain, and sorry for my explicit language but it can better explain the situation. The word "puto" has many meanings attached to it. One of them is the equivalent in English of "faggot", but it also has many other meanings, such as "fucking", "damned", "coward", "traitor", "man prostitute" and so on. Since around 10 years ago, stadiums around México (and games abroad where México plays) have shouted that word everytime the goalkpeer from the opposing team kicks off as means of distracting him or intimidating him. The origin goes back to a 2003 game between Atlas and Guadalajara, where the goalkeeper took a long time to kick off and the people started shouting "puto" meaning "coward" (not wanting to put the ball back into play). Now, this word is used indistinctively in the Mexican d...
