NYC HIGH SCHOOL DEBATE TOURNAMENT #2 RESULTS!


 
This week we celebrate our last Tournament of 2014!!!!  Yesterday, December 13th, we hosted our second high school tournament of the year with 87 high school debate teams, 156 debaters, and 76 debate judges! Shout outs to all high schools participating - All City Leadership, Benjamin Banneker, Bronx Collaborative Studies, Brooklyn Technical HS, Cornerstone Academy for Social Action, DeWitt Clinton, Health Professions, High School for Law, Advocacy and Community Justice, Institute for Collaborative Education, KIPP, Lakeland, Maspeth, Mott Hall Bronx, Queens HS for the Sciences, Science, Technology and Research, Staten Island Technical HS, and Success Academy HS!

Another huge shout out to all the judges, teachers, coaches, staff and volunteers who made this tournament possible and all our 2014 tournaments possible!!!  And in a couple weeks we kick off the new year with our January 10th NYC High School Debate Tournament #3 at Brooklyn Tech High School!  If interested in judging click here!

About the High School Division
The New York City High School Debate League is one of the most successful debate leagues in the nation. Our debaters have won city, state, regional and national championships.  Our debaters have reached the elimination rounds at every majority national debate tournament including Harvard University, Yale University, Georgetown University, Dartmouth University. Between 95% - 100% of our high school debaters graduate and are accepted to college - many receiving full or partial scholarships because of debate.

Policy Debate Topic
Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its non-military exploration and/or development of the Earth's oceans.

Public Forum Debate Topic
Based on a nationwide vote, the 2015 January Public Forum topic is, Resolved: United Nations peacekeepers should have the power to engage in offensive operations.  A total of 255 schools and 245 students voted for the resolution. The winning resolution received 64% of the school vote and 81% percent of the student vote.

Parliamentary Debate Topics

1. This House will decriminalize recreational drug use.
2. This House believes youth competitive sports do more harm than good.

The NYC Debate League is the largest middle school debate league in the nation. Registration is open to all elementary, middle and high schools!  The NYC Debate League provides year round support - training, professional development, curriculum, workshops, outreach, debate nights, monthly tournaments which include student meals, and summer debate camps - anything and everything to support debate teams in NYC.

The NYC Debate League staff is award winning and have coached local, regional and national debate champions.  We also have a huge network of volunteers, alumni, mentors, and college debaters to support your team. 99% of our teachers have no debate experience and so we provide any training and resources as needed to start and sustain a successful debate program!  Click here to make an appointment for us to visit your school!

Nearly every weekend we host elementary school, middle school and high school debate tournaments, workshops and practices. Your debate team is more than welcome to come watch or compete at any of our tournaments. We also host workshops for new debaters at each tournament as well!
