Chicago Debate Commission - Join Our Debate team!

Support teams that make a difference!
"Through debate, our team gained an identity, and the confidence to prove that we weren't to be overlooked."
- CDL Alum, Anthony Adams, shares his experience as a varsity debater at Joslin Perspectives High School

Each year, debate improves the lives of almost 1400 high school and middle school kids in Chicago - most of them low-income students of color. The activity of debate provides them powerful skills in written and verbal communication, evidence-based argumentation, research, and critical thinking. In fact, debate participation in the Chicago Debate League is
research-proven to increase grades, graduation rates, and college readiness for Chicago students!

Debate also teaches us the incredible power of teamwork, and our debaters demonstrate teamwork at it's best. Debate teams give students a voice, a competitive edge, a place to be smart, and a devoted community. For Kaylen, her Lindblom High School debate team has become her family, "taking up the empty space" when her parents couldn't be there for her. Anthony (quoted above) hopes to recreate his rewarding experience as a high school debater by starting his own team at college.

Will you join our debate team this year?
The Chicago Debate Commission must raise over $600,000 from supporters like you (about $8,000 for each team in our league). Your investment is critical to making debate teams viable and effective for thousands of well-deserving students each year. What's the impact? Students like Kaylen, Anthony and their teammates will improve their academic results, college success, and life-opportunities - all through the unique power of debate.

Meet the
Kennedy High School Debate Team

The novice Kennedy Debate team started debating in the middle of the 2012-2013 debate season in the entry level conference. The Kennedy debaters quickly learned the ropes and have now moved up two conferences, competing with some of the league's most advanced debaters. Today, the ambitious team has become a shining light in Kennedy High School's efforts to promote academic success.
